Sharron and all,
I've had the same experience with Emerald/Aslib. We access five titles,
three of which are owned by Emerald and two of which are retained by
Aslib. It seems a really stupid system that the two Aslib titles (Aslib
Proceedings and Journal of Documentation) are accessed by a user ID and
password, whereas the three Emerald titles are accessed by IP range. Yet
all five are hosted on the same system. What's more, it's not clear, when
you try to access either Aslib Proceedings or Journal of Documentation,
having got as far as Emerald, that you are supposed to log in to get to the
full text.
When I set up access to these journals (quite recently), I had cause to ring
up Aslib to check a password and I said all this to them. However, the
response I got suggested that they are not thinking of changing access to
IP range in the near future, which is a pity. It would make access to the
journals much easier and more convenient.
Admittedly, Kew does not have the same issues that QMUC has, in that
these journals will be used mainly by library staff and not library users, but
having to use an ID and password creates a needless barrier to the full text.
Kind regards,
Fiona
