Abstract
Whilst only few decennia ago the technique of intensive field survey needed strong justification even among archaeological field workers, it is now generally recognized as a basic tool to the study of regional landscapes. In Italy, this acknowledgement is being accompanied by a wave of recent survey projects, covering plains, plateaus, valleys and mountains alike. At the same time, continuous and fervent debate is ongoing across issues ranging from methodological details to macro-regional interpretive schemes; a critical attitude which attests to the vigour of the discipline.
This session aims at reviewing recent developments in these debates. It takes a diachronic perspective. We suggest that contributions (either papers or posters) should focus on one of the following topics:
? Method: The design and execution of field surveys. Issues include the use of new technology (GIS, GPS); the targeting of rural, off-site, or even marginal areas; and the emphasis on the fair representation of all periods/cultures;
? Data analysis: The integration of field survey data and environmental studies (eg, geo-archaeology, archaeobotany);
? Interpretation: Comparative studies, especially concerning the integration of individual projects into macroregional (Italian/Mediterranean) frameworks.
