SEMINAR - CONSUMPTION, CHRISTIANITY AND CREATION

You are invited to an interdisciplinary academic seminar to be held at
Sheffield Hallam University, UK on FRIDAY 5TH JULY, the aim of which is to
explore the relationship between consumption and Christianity in the
context of sustainable development.

The seminar will be introduced by Sir Brian Heap CBE ScD FRS, Master of St
Edmund's College, Cambridge and co-author of the Royal Society report
Towards Sustainable Consumption: a European perspective. There will be a
keynote address by the Bishop of Liverpool, Rt Rev James Jones, and around
20 academic papers in parallel sessions including:
Can We Have a Positive Theological View of Consumption? Dr Gordon Lynch,
University of Birmingham.
Puritan-Consumer Pentecostalism: New Pentecostal Churches in South Africa,
K. Maria Frahm-Arp, University of Warwick.
What’s Right about Prosperity Theology? Dr. Andrew Perriman, London.
Sustainable Capitalism: A Contradiction in Terms? Revd Dr Peter S Heslam,
London Institute for Contemporary Christianity.
Consumer Culture as a Failure in Theodicy, Prof Tim Jackson, University of
Surrey.
Attached to This World? Waste and 'the most materialistic of all
religions', Dr Tim Cooper, Sheffield Hallam University.
Consumption in a Post-Communist Country, Petra Zivnustkova, International
Baptist Theological Seminary of the European Baptist Federation, Czech
Republic.
Spirituality and Ethical Consumption, Dr Deirdre Shaw, Glasgow Caledonian
University.

The seminar takes place from 10.30am-4.30pm at Sheffield Hallam University,
which is 5 minutes walk from Sheffield railway station. There is a charge
of £40, which includes a buffet lunch and refreshments (which we hope will
be organic and fairly traded). Booking prior to SATURDAY 18TH MAY is
strongly advised, as there is limited capacity and a £10 late booking fee.
To book your place, please email the Seminar Administrator. Please note
that participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation
arrangements. Sheffield has a range of hotels, details of which can be
obtained from the Seminar Administrator.

A series of related events organised by the church-based environmental

including a debate on the Friday evening and a Conference aimed at the
general public on the Saturday. The Conference, entitled While Stocks Last,
will be addressed by John Gummer MP and Sir John Houghton and includes
workshops. Please note that the academic seminar is at Sheffield Hallam
University, whereas the Conference on Saturday is at the University of
Sheffield. There are separate booking arrangements. Further information
about the Conference, including overnight accommodation for those attending
both the Academic Seminar and the Conference, can be obtained from CEL on
