I hope that you have all enjoyed the summer, and have been thinking
about your submission to the Seattle Club conference.
This is a reminder to submit your abstracts to me by 30 September
(see copy of original email below, and attached submission
information). I aim to inform everyone about acceptances within 2-3
weeks to give you time to confirm registration (see information
below). To do this, it is crucial that you submit abstracts by 30
September at the very latest. The sooner the better though. The
programme will be fairly tight for space, so please get your abstract
in by the deadline to avoid overwhelming disappointment. Thanks.
Please forward this message to colleagues/contacts - don't assume
that my distribution list is comprehensive. Remember that you can
attend without presenting and the conference cost is designed to
facilitate this especially perhaps for students, assistants and
trainees. Thank you.
The following is a brief summary of the registration arrangements
(registration form will follow shortly):
Dates 16-17th December 2002
Price Day Delegate: £30 (price covers 1 or 2 days)
Price Overnight Delegate: £80
Registration deadline will be mid-November
We have booked 25 rooms in Lucas House (same place as last
year) for "overnight" delegates but we will also provide details of a
range of B&Bs in the local
area if people would prefer to book their own.
To try to keep costs at a minimum
the conference will be held in the psychology department and
registration will include cold buffet lunches and coffee for breaks.
For presenters, there will be all possible presentation equipment;
video, overheads, slides, powerpoint etc, though powerpoint would
be preferable.
There has been a guest lecture arranged for the Monday
evening (details to follow), again at the university, and an optional
meal also on Monday evening (Balti).
Initial call for submissions follows:
>
>Initial soundings were very positive from people interested in a
>research-only conference in intellectual disabilities for UK
>researchers to follow-on from last year's inaugural event. The
>conference is still called the "Seattle Club" simply for want of a
>better label and because the impetus for this meeting emerged from
>attendees at the IASSID World Congress in Seattle in 2000.
>
>It's now time to ask for submissions for the 2002 conference to be
>held again in Birmingham 16/17 December. Attached are two files: one
>with information about submission, and one form for you to complete
>details about presenters etc. An abstract should accompany this
>submission form. Please note that the submission deadline is 30
>September 2002 and submissions should be sent by email if at all
>possible to me ([log in to unmask]).
>
>A number of pieces of information that you will need to know:
>
>Administrative arrangements are being co-ordinated by Chris Oliver
>and I will relay messages from Birmingham re registration etc as they
>become available. All attendees will need to register and pay in
>advance. Because of demand for places, and in order to maintain a
>single conference programme (i.e., no parallel themes) after its
>success last year, the presentations will probably be held in a
>lecture theatre. This has meant that arrangements are being revised
>and the costs may well be lower than the original estimate.
>Accomodation is likely to be organised by asking delegates to make
>direct contact with a number of hotels/B&Bs close to the University
>site (information to be provided). If you have students who would
>like to attend but funds are short, please contact Chris
>([log in to unmask]) who might have some ideas.
>
>A small number of colleagues agreed informally to assist with the
>2002 meeting and they will be invited to help review the submissions
>for the conference. At the risk of upsetting those people I will just
>say that
>they might include: Chris Hatton, Andrew Jahoda, Glynis Murphy, Biza
>Kroese, Chris Oliver, and David Felce.
>
>Submissions should focus on applied and basic behavioural and social
>sciences research on intellectual and developmental disabilities
>(i.e., not medical research). There is no overall theme beyond the
>research focus and the expectation that the research should ideally
>be theory-driven.
>
>Submissions must include a report of research data (qualitative or
>quantitative). Ideally, these data should not yet have been published
>but can be in press (to ensure we're dealing with the latest
>research).
>
>It is likely that presenters will get a 15 minute slot for their
>presentation. We will have to keep strictly to time. It is possible
>that not every attendee will be able to present. If you would be
>willing to forego presenting so that someone else can do so, please
>indicate this when you submit your abstract. As you will be aware,
>some people MUST be presenting in order to obtain funds from their
>organisation.
>
>We are keen to encourage the "next generation" of researchers to
>attend this conference, so please encourage trainees/students
>wherever you can. They do not have to be presenting to attend.
>
>The conference will begin at around 10/10.30am on the 16th and finish
>at roughly 4pm on the 17th. We are exploring the inclusion of an open
>lecture early on Monday evening to be given as a keynote within the
>conference. For those who wish to continue socialising in the
>evening, tables at a local Balti house (inc. veggie menu) will be
>booked for Monday.
>
>Please let me know if you have any questions, and look out for
>registration and accomodation information soon. Please also forward
>the information to students and colleagues as appropriate. Please
>also remember colleagues who do not use e-mail frequently and print
>out the information for them.
>
>I look forward to receiving submissions by Monday 30 September.
>
>Have an enjoyable summer.
