Subject: Representation of latitude and longitude
I have been asked to coordinate a UK response to a review of ISO standard
6709, "Standard representation of latitude, longitude and altitude for
geographic point locations". This ISO standard is replicated as part 3 of
British standard BS5249, "Representation of elements of data in interchanges
using data processing systems".
The following are the key elements of the standard:
* considers latitude, longitude and optionally "altitude".
* latitude is positive north, negative south of the equator.
* longitude is positive east and negative west of Greenwich.
* latitude and longitude are in degrees, as a signed decimal number.
The format allows for degrees either as a decimal, or degrees minutes and
decimal minutes, or degrees minutes seconds and decimal seconds.
* altitude is positive above and negative below the vertical datum.
* altitude is in metres or alternatively feet where specified in
metadata [my word].
* the representation is a single text string with the values to any
precision for latitude and longitude and optionally altitude, using + and -
signs as value separators.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who would like to comment on
the standard, and in particular can advise:
(i) Is ISO6709 or BS5249-3 in use? If so, where?
(ii) What do you consider to be the appropriate method for representation of
latitude, longitude and height/depth?
