Facing Portraiture is a two-day conference on contemporary approaches
to the study of portraiture. The conference coincides with Americans,
a major exhibition of portrait paintings and photographs from the
collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian
Institution, Washington, DC.
Key themes of the conference include:
- the portrait as a historical document
- the changing role and status of portraiture
- portraiture and national identity
