Announcing a course on the theory and practice of functional and
structural brain image analysis:
The Second FSL & FreeSurfer Course
23-36 September, 2002
Oxford, UK
Following the recent successful FSL/FreeSurfer course in Melbourne,
there will be a similar course in Oxford this coming September. The
intensive 4-day course covers both the theory and practice of
functional and structural brain image analysis. Background concepts
and the practicalities of analyses are taught in detailed lectures;
these are interleaved with hands-on practical sessions where attendees
learn how to carry out analysis for themselves on real data, with at
most two attendees per workstation. By the end of the course attendees
should be able to fully analyse their own FMRI or MRI data sets.
The methods covered include GLM-based analysis of FMRI data, image
registration (alignment), model-free (ICA) analysis of FMRI data,
cortical-flattening of images (and its applications), brain
extraction, tissue segmentation and structural statistical analysis
(e.g. for atrophy). Significant new features in FEAT (GLM-FMRI),
MELODIC (ICA-FMRI) and SIENA (structural statistical analysis) will be
covered. The course is aimed at both new and existing users of these
packages and will cover both basic and advanced features. Speakers
include Christian Beckmann (FMRIB, Oxford), Doug Greve (MGH, Boston),
Mark Jenkinson (Howard Florey Institute, Melbourne), Stephen Smith
(FMRIB, Oxford) and Mark Woolrich (FMRIB, Oxford).
Registration is 75 UK pounds for students, 150 for non-student
academic attendees and 500 for industrial attendees. This is a
non-profit-making course; registration includes the practical
sessions, course notes and sandwich lunches, but does not include
accommodation; see http://www.oxfordcity.co.uk/accom/index.html for a
list of local hotels. The course will be held in Comlab, which is
quite central in the city.
We expect demand for this course to be quite high; the limited number
of places will be assigned purely on a first-come-first-served
basis. To register, email [log in to unmask], and send a cheque,
payable to "The University of Oxford", to "Course, FMRIB, John
Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford OX3 9DU, UK". When we receive
payment we will confirm your registration and send out a
receipt. Cheques in foreign currencies are acceptable at standard
current conversion rates.
