Article Thirteen is a newly-established Centre which will research and
promote the idea of free and unfettered movement of peoples across borders.
The Centre takes its name from an historical text, the 1948 Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, but it aims to address contemporary issues and
obstacles to free movement, and therefore contributes to research on
immigration, refugee studies, human rights and ethics. Current debates
concerning Free Trade, which centre on goods but not individuals, make this
subject topical; the attacks against the World Trade Centre and the
Pentagon, and the resulting backlash against "foreigners," have heightened
the urgency of our work. To address the many sides of issues relating to
migration, nationalism, persecution, security, integration, and terrorism,
the Centre will engage in a range of activities, including regular
international conferences, a journal bearing the title Article Thirteen (in
both electronic and paper form), a regular international poster campaign
(offering useful information and promoting a better understanding of
migration issues), and research projects in all matters relating to the
Centre.
Article Thirteen's first conference will be held in Montreal, 10-12 May
2002. Visit http://www.articlethirteen.com for more information.
