(Please send your comments and suggestions to the Refugee Claimants Support
Centre <[log in to unmask]>.)
The Refugee Claimants Support Centre in Brisbane, Australia, has
independently produced this album with songs written and performed by asylum
seekers and friends of the Centre. The CD takes a musical journey from the
experience of a peaceful life in one's hometown through the upheaval that
leads to flight and then
the process of seeking protection. It is a beautiful, creative response to
the increasingly fearful stance being taken by many Western countries
towards asylum seekers.
The CD was awarded 'Best Producer' at the 2001 Sunnie Awards of the
Queensland Recording Association and is highly recommended by New
Internationalist Australia. One of the songs 'Labarik Sira Hotu' was used by
the UN in East Timor to back their advertisements to encourage people to
vote in the 2001 elections. We are encouraging people to use the CD in their
work as it provides another dimension to awareness-raising efforts. Also,
rather than using commercial distributors, we are seeking social justice
oriented groups (especially those involved with refugees or East Timor)
around the world that wish to sell the CD as a fundraiser for their
organisation. We've sold almost 2000 CDs in Brisbane with no real
advertising. If you are interested, there is more information, and some
audio clips from the CD available on our website at
http://www.refugees.org.au/fundrsr.html
Finally, I have no background in marketing and need all the help I can get.
So, if you have any ideas, know of any other organisations that may
interested in selling the CD (especially beyond Brisbane and overseas), or
know any marketing gurus who may want to help us, I would be forever
grateful if you would let me know. Could you forward this email onto other
organizations that you feel may be interested in Scattered People? As you
are probably aware, the treatment of asylum seekers in Australia is
shocking. Selling this CD is one of the few avenues that we have available
to us for raising money to continue our work.
Warm regards,
Chris Gibbings
