The seventh annual conference organized by students and faculty of Webster
University on humanitarian, human rights and refugee issues will be held on
21-22 February 2002, at the International Conference Center of Geneva on the
theme of

Humanitarian Values for the Twenty-First Century

The momentum gained by humanitarian action, however, also reflects the
widespread recognition of the importance of humanitarian values at the
individual and at the societal levels.

Today, there is widespread consensus for a need to reaffirm core
humanitarian principles throughout the world. It is also generally
recognized that respect for humanitarian principles should be seen not only
as a legal obligation, but also as a binding element of our common
traditions and political principles.

The conference will deal with the following questions: how universal are
humanitarian values in geographic and political terms? How strongly are they
held in different parts of the world? What is the link between humanitarian
values and action? What are the interests and beliefs that tend to undermine
the respect for these values?

The conference will be open both to experts and the general public. Like the
previous editions the 2002 conference will be held under the auspices of the
Government of the Canton of Geneva.

As in previous years, the conference will be organized with the support and
participation of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as well as other governmental and
non-governmental organizations. We will also benefit from the support of the
Geneva Foundation.
