Abstract:
The rise in irregular migration is increasingly linked to the growing
problem of trafficking in migrants through organized crime. Criminal
networks misinform would-be migrants by exploiting their ignorance of what
lies in store for them and often expose them to physical harm and danger,
economic despair, forced labour and vulnerability in destination countries.
The more the racketeers succeed in this new form of human trading, the more
they influence the flows and patterns of irregular migration; and with this
further erode the credibility of regular migration.
IOM actively seeks to prevent migrant trafficking through awareness and
information campaigns, counselling and safe, dignified return and
reintegration in their home countries; and protecting migrants' rights in
the process.
Through its global network of offices and contacts, IOM conducts research
and regularly collects data on trafficking, helps enhance governments' legal
and technical capacities to counter trafficking, and provides opportunities
to victims for voluntary return and reintegration assistance. Currently,
these activities are focused on Central and Eastern Europe, Baltic States,
the CIS region, Nigeria, the Mekong region, and Asia.
