Look at Spain. It has one of
the largest cinema-going audiences in the world (I don't have the
figures at hand, but it's one of the biggest in Europe, and a Spanish
colleague told me the other day it was eighth largest in the world
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to quote official 2001 figures for you - since I lived in Spain for
11 years:
There was a 5% rise in cinema admissions to 142 million.
Box office takings increased 9% in 2001 to $526.7 million, an all-time
record. In a sign of the growing globalization of single territory hits,
Spain's four highest-grossing pics were European or originated in
Europe, led by the two biggest Spanish money-spinners ever: "The Others"
($23 million) and "Torrente 2" ($19 million).
As reported by Spain in the territory reports at the American Film
Market
