I agree with Damian Sutton that much of the public discussion of
George Lucas has a frenzied, blood-in-the-water feeling.
It's kind of amusing when you think how beyond anyone's power to
praise or damn the man is: given Lucas's position in developing THX
sound technology and contracting services under the Industrial Light
and Magic name, it's hard to imagine how any amount of carping could
really affect his bottom line.
Could this be a reason for the frenzy? Could ressentiment be alive
and well in our oh-so-knowing, postindustrial era?
Not to sound too defeatist, but it doesn't matter what this
particular emperor is or isn't wearing--he's still going to be the
emperor.
In defense of Steven Hart and his critique in salon.com: he did get
our discussion going, didn't he? Perhaps his posing of the questions
was as important as the particular positions he staked out.
