3rd National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment
EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED

Jonathan Lash, President of the World Resources Institute, will present
the keynote lecture at the 3rd National Conference on Science, Policy
and the Environment. The theme of the conference is EDUCATION FOR A
SUSTAINABLE AND SECURE FUTURE. The meeting will take place January
30-31, 2003 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
in Washington, DC. Mr. Lash will discuss the dependence of security
upon sustainability, as presented in his often cited editorial in
Science "Dealing with the Tinder as Well as the Flint" (November 30,
2001).
Lash was co-chair of the President's Council on Sustainable Development
from 1993-1999 and also co-chaired the Organisation for Economic
Co-Operation and Development's High-Level Advisory Group on Environment.
Before joining WRI, Mr. Lash served as Vermont's Commissioner of
Environmental Conservation, headed the Vermont Agency of Natural
Resources, and directed the environmental law and policy program of the
Vermont Law School.
At the conference, join leading scientists, educators and policymakers
from around the world to discuss how education can contribute to a
sustainable and secure future for all. Participants in 21 breakout
sessions will develop a set of recommendations for the United States and
for the upcoming UN Decade of Education for Sustainability (2005-2015)
that will be transmitted in an action-oriented report produced by the
National Council on Science and the Environment following the
conference.
Other speakers include Dr. Rita Colwell, Director of the National
Science Foundation, who will present the 3rd Annual John H. Chafee
Memorial Lecture on Science and the Environment; former Senator Gaylord
Nelson, founder of Earth Day and a global leader in environmental and
sustainability education who will receive the NCSE Lifetime Achievement
Award; and Congressman Vernon Ehlers (MI), Chair of the House of
Representatives Science Committee's environment subcommittee who will
receive NCSE's Congressional Leadership Award.
Panelists include Congressman Rush Holt (NJ), environmental studies
leader Dr. David Orr, USGS Director Dr. Chip Groat, EPA Assistant
Administrator for Research Dr. Paul Gilman, Denis Hayes organizer of the
first Earth Day, Washington Post editorial cartoonist Tom Toles and
moderator Ray Suarez from the NewsHour.
