NICE WEB SITE
In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes
come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing
mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a
short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large,
and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy
discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these:
Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice
Web Site Archive.

PRESS RELEASES
**** U.S. Department of Energy Proposes to Discontinue PubSCIENCE ****
Since its inception in 1999, PubSCIENCE (<http://pubsci.osti.gov/>) has
provided researchers and science-attentive citizens access to bibliographic
records of peer-reviewed journal literature relating to DOE-supported work,
addressing the need for a searchable gateway for the Department's Web
patrons. Based on an extensive public/private sector collaboration,
PubSCIENCE has covered journals of participating science publishers,
including hyperlinks to the full text on publishers' servers. PubSCIENCE was
developed by DOE's Office of Scientific and Technical Information and made
available to the American public in partnership with the U.S. Government
Printing Office (GPO).
More recently, private sector information products have emerged that freely
offer bibliographic records to Web patrons. Provider systems such as Scirus
and Infotrieve have progressively increased the availability of freely
searchable citations, and this trend is anticipated to continue. A recent
comparison of the content between PubSCIENCE and Scirus and Infotrieve
showed that 90% of the journal literature in the scope of PubSCIENCE was
covered by these two products. Taken as a whole, they provide coverage of
information for DOE Web patrons.
As a result of these findings DOE is hereby proposing to discontinue
PubSCIENCE. Comments on this proposed action will be collected using the
comment form available on this Web site for a 30-day comment period to end
September 8, 2002. Comments received will be considered in the final
decision process for the future of PubSCIENCE.

**** IOP adopts OAI technical framework ****
On behalf of the Institute of Physics, I m pleased to announce our recent
implementation of the Open Archives Initiative technical framework for our
Electronic Journals service (http://www.iop.org/EJ).
As you may know, the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) develops and promotes
interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient
dissemination of content . The key standard promoted by the initiative
focuses on content providers making metadata records available in a common
format - the Dublin Core Element Set. We are pleased to confirm that we have
adopted this standard here at the Institute and metadata records for our
article abstracts are now available in this format. They can be harvested
from our server on request.
This news will be of interest to a range of individuals and organizations
including the E-Print community, fellow publishers and A & I service
providers. It is also relevant to you if your institution subscribes to our
journals and you wish to harvest our abstract data with a view to loading it
locally and/or adding elements of it to your OPAC.
If are interested, please contact [log in to unmask] in the first instance.
Further information on the Open Archives Initiative can be found online at
http://www.openarchives.org.

**** The Scientist Launches New Website ****
The Scientist, an international news magazine for life scientists, has
launched a completely new design for its Web site, (www.the-scientist.com)
to reflect the new format and style adopted by the print publication last
January.
The site's fresh design effectively present it's bi-weekly content and
provides easy navigation for its audience of more than 425,000 registered
users. A daily news service, where reporters from London and New York report
on breaking news in the world of science, is just one new feature
implemented to encourage users to visit more frequently.
The 16-year full-text archive of The Scientist back issues has also been
completed. This electronic archive makes the earliest issues from the 1980s
available, offering a fascinating glimpse of the concerns of scientists over
the years. "We take considerable pride in being able to make our entire
archive available to anyone, free of charge," states Alexander Grimwade,
Publisher.
The newly designed site is, effectively, the fourth generation of The
Scientist on the Web. In 1992 - almost prehistoric to Internet time - The
Scientist launched an experiment with the National Science Foundation
whereby text files of each issue were provided through a Gopher site.
Nowadays, Gopher seems quaint, but in the late '80s it was the height of
Internet sophistication. Through this service, The Scientist was the first
regularly published periodical available in full text on the Internet.
In 1995, The Scientist started its own website in partnership with the
library of the University of Pennsylvania. Then in 2000, the Website was
moved to a commercial provider using the current domain name,
www.the-scientist.com.
Now the design has changed again, boasting easier navigation, daily news and
the complete, full-text archive. Unlimited access is free, with just a
simple registration process required. The Scientist strongly encourages
everyone to visit the site, not only for the latest news and features, but
also for the valuable perspective it offers on the development in the
scientific field.

BOOK REVIEW
Review of:
Getting and staying noticed on the web: your web promotion questions
answered
By Phil Bradley
facet publishing
2002
ISBN: 1-85604-455-6
#29.95

Who is Phil Bradley?

He's a well known independent consultant. He writes a monthly Question and
Answer column in CILIP Update (the Chartered Institute of Library and
Information Professionals), which I never fail to read.

Do you know him?

I've met him a few times. He chaired an 'Ask the experts' session at Online
2001 in which I took part.

What about this new book, then?

He has written an entire book "Getting and staying noticed on the web: your
web promotion questions answered" in a question and answer format.
Does he ever get tired of the question and answer format?

I don't know

Is the Q & A format effective for this new book?

I think it works very well.

How many pages are there in the book?

Two hundred and nineteen.

Do you mean to say that he keeps up the format for two hundred and nineteen
pages?

Just about. Even the chapter descriptions list the questions in each
section. Though I should point out that the brief index, and the Author's
introduction, are normal text.

What is the book about?

It is about how to promote web sites.

Is that all?

Well, promoting your web site is very important. What is the point of
spending time and effort producing a web site if no-one knows about it or
can find it?

I'll ask the questions, if you don't mind? What sort of topics does he
cover?

Everything from why you might want a web site, what its domain name should
be, why branding is important, what its content should include, how to
register with search engines, how to make the most of images, what features
to offer, how to use mailing lists to publicise your site, whether bulk
e-mailing is useful, how to utilise banners, how to make the most of
traditional promotion services, how to write effective press releases and
where to send them, how to deal with competition, and how to monitor
success.

Can you quote me a typical question?

If I do, it will be in the form of a question.

That's OK. You don't expect me to answer it do you?

OK, then, here's one: "Are there any types of pages that will be ignored by
a search engine?"

And what's the answer?

Its a fairly long answer in this particular case. You can find it on page
70.

Who should read this book?

I think that anyone who has produced, or is thinking of producing, a web
site should read it. Anyone who is involved, in any way, in Internet
marketing will find it invaluable.

Is it worth #29.95?

When you consider how much it can cost to produce a web site, investing less
than thirty Pounds to find out how to promote it can be seen as a bargain.

Does Phil Bradley get tired of asking and answering questions?
You can ask him yourself. His web site is http://www.philb.com/
