We are looking for a capable and motivated assistant to assist in the
development of study skills course to be delivered by means of e-learning to
the School's students and across the wider University
While experience of designing courses for an e-learning environment is not
essential, it is anticipated that you will have an appreciation of how the
mode of delivery should influence the design of the course.
This post will appeal particularly to those with an interest in study
skills, non-traditional learners, flexible, distance and in particular
e-learning.
You should have: A degree, a proven interest in study skills, some knowledge
of e-learning, excellent communication and IT skills, be a good team player,
capable of innovation and enterprise and be comfortable in working to
deadlines

Job Description
Teaching and learning research assistant (Study skills project)
Grade 1A
School of Continuing Education
The School of Continuing Education runs a programme of over two hundred
part-time, day-time, evening and weekend courses for members of the public.
The School has been awarded funds to develop an e-learning study skills
module, which will eventually be made available to any University student.
The post holder will be employed to assist the School's Director of Teaching
and Learning in the design and development of content for the study skills
module with a view to supervising its implementation in an e-learning
environment. While experience of designing courses for an e-learning
environment is not essential it is anticipated that the post holder will
have an appreciation of how the mode of delivery should influence the design
of the course.
The module will cover generic areas (how to write a good essay, how to give
a presentation, how to use a library, how to take notes, how to cite your
sources, how to read effectively, how to do a book review, how to use the
Internet for your studies, how to prepare for an examination) as well as a
number of more subject specific sections. Many guides and other advice
documents already exist on study skills both inside and outside The
University of Reading, the challenge for the post holder is to turn such
static and abstract materials into high quality, interactive, engaging and
meaningful learning materials that take advantage of the potential offered
by an e-learning environment.
The post holder will be expected to:
a.. locate and explore e-learning study skills materials that already
exist
b.. create and develop new materials
c.. work with academic staff with particular subject expertise
d.. work with technical staff to implement the module in an e-learning
environment
The post is part-time (0.5) and working times will be flexible
