Newcastle being outside the charmed circle, I had to pay some dollars to
read the article.
It seems to refute two suggestions. One is that complexity theory
challenges current philosophy of medicine (in the form of a philosophy
of the immediate causation of disease in an individual organism). The
other is that complexity theory provides a way of resolving the paradox
of free will and determinism.
These rebuttals are not central to the way that I look at the practice
of medicine (rather than its philosophy as defined above), nor to the
way that I look at free will (which is to question the nature of the "I"
that is able to make up "my own" mind). Complexity theory, as I think
about it, helps me with both.
Can I say this without being breathless?

Dear Chris
Brilliant, thanks. Amazingly it is one of the journals Warwick
subscribes to. Perhaps one day they will get around to subscribing to
JAMA and NEJM!

It's in Medical Humanities which is a BMJ group publication. The article
is in the current issue and an abstract is available online ( full text
if you belong to some appropriate charmed circle of academic access, or
want to pay for it)
