I agree that looking at the brain, consciousness and thought would be of
value. John Holland identified our lack of understanding of most aspects of
cognition as one of the major obstacles to furthering our study and
understanding of emergence. ( Emergence - from chaos to order, Holland 1998)
I don't know Susan Greenfield unfortunately!
