From The Australian newspaper...
Slugging it out over children's TV (The Australian)
Producers and networks are brawling over children's television. The amount
of time the free-to-air networks are obliged to set aside for children's
programming is being debated in a review of the Australian content standards
under way at the Australian Broadcasting Authority, and things are getting
pretty nasty. The Screen Producers' Association of Australia, representing
the independent companies that produce Australia's drama shows, want to see
the quota of hours for first-run Australian-made children's drama increase
from 32 hours per year to 35. Against them is the Federation of Australian
Commercial Television Stations, representing the Seven, Nine and Ten
networks. They want more flexibility regarding children's shows because they
believe children's drama doesn't rate and is therefore too expensive to
schedule.
