AT THE BORDER:
MARGINS AND PERIPHERIES IN MODERN FRANCE
University of Glamorgan
29 – 31 August 2002
This conference organised by the Association for the Study of Modern and
Contemporary France examines not only the geographical borders surrounding
France and overseas territories but also the various cultural borders
within the country, such as the borders between various classes, races and
sexual identities. The papers presented by established scholars and up-
and-coming academics in the fields of French studies, politics, art and
history engage with recent developments in border studies. They will
demonstrate that borders can no longer be seen simply as political, static,
and excluding, but also as social, integrative and changing, as sites where
interaction, adaptation, mixture and also conflict take place. Keynote
speakers include among others Gino Raymond (University of Bristol), who
will consider the new, vibrant politics that have grown at the margins of
the political establishment and Isabelle Larrivée (Ecole Americaine de
Casablanca, Morocco) who will examine the cultural `transhumance’ of
Magrebian writer, who loses him or herself while trying to re-find an
identity. Parallel sessions cover a wide range of themes, including
regional rivalry, literary and artistic margins, maritime and island
identities, outre-mer, wars and borders, and politics and gay identities.
