George Lamming to deliver the Fourth Jagan Lecture
The Jagan Lecture Planning Committee announces the Fourth Cheddi Jagan
Lecture which will be held at York University (Toronto, ON, Canada) on
March 2, 2002. The speaker will be George Lamming, the renowned
author, lecturer, and commentator from Barbados. Mr. Lamming’s novel
In the Castle of My Skin (1953) has long been recognized as a
foundation text of Caribbean literature, while his non-fiction work
The Pleasures of Exile (1960) is acknowledged as a seminal text on the
cultural history of the region. In recent years Mr. Lamming has
devoted his time to lecturing and trade union activity.
The Jagan Lectures commemorate the life and vision of the late Dr.
Cheddi Jagan, Caribbean thinker, politician, and political visionary.
The series of annual lectures is founded upon the idea that the many
and varied dimensions of Cheddi Jagan’s belief in the possibility of a
New Global Human Order should be publicly acknowledged as part of his
permanent legacy to the world.
Further details about the 2002 Jagan Lecture will be announced at a
later date. Look for up-dates on the webpage for the event, at the URL
