Situated Knowledges: Consumption, Production and Identity in a Global Context
University of Wales, Aberystwyth Tuesday 3-Thursday 5 September 2002
CONFERENCE STRAND:
MINORITY IDENTITY AND MATERIAL CULTURE
The uses we make of the material culture available to us influences and shapes our sense of self and how we are perceived by others. When this is utilised by 'minority groups' how much more charged does the term 'minority' become? What does this relationship mean about the identity of an individual or a community defined as a 'minority'? 'Minority' here includes race, ethnicity and sexuality. This could be discussed through the following suggested themes:
a.. Dress/fashion
b.. Textiles
c.. Consumption
d.. Graphic Design
e.. Transport
f.. The home
g.. Politics of display: Museums/exhibitions
Abstracts and other suggested areas of no more than 300 words must reach the strand convenor by 30 March 2002: Carol Tulloch, Curator, Archives and Museum of Black Heritage, 378 Coldharbour Lane, London SW9 8LF. Email: [log in to unmask]
