here in Swansea we only register those students who need to actually use
Blackboard. We achieved this by using Module Code as the only allowable
identifier for bb courses and student number as the only allowable
identifier for students
All the relevant data is exported nightly from our student records system -
I retrieve this automatically into my own access database which uses the
data to create the two batch files I need
At the moment I run the batch files which are grouped by department in
full so that bb just picks out the new ones - I have just realised writing
this that what I could do now is to mark the names as "created" whenever
the query is run - this way my db will only output the new users to me!
We did not enrol all students as we did not want to raise expectations
amongst those not using bb.
I use the access database to automatically generate the user name (which
is always student number and a password which is a combination of their
user name and some standard text) This way instructors know exactly what
information to give their students to enable them to log in
