I can't give much help with most of these, but:
>
> Africanus Horton 1835 - 1883, Sierra Leone-born physician, head
> of Army Medical Dept. in the Gold Coast, publisher of scientic
> papers and ground-breaking book of sociology/history, West African
> Countries and Peoples. London address in 1880s: 40 St.Luke's Rd,
> Westbourne Park (he was establishing the Commercial Bank of West
> Africa) See Christopher Fyfe, Africanus Horton, London
>
James Beale Africanus Horton. First black African graduate of the
University of Edinburgh (MD 1859 - dissertation 'On the medical
topography of the west coast of Africa'). Published 'West African
Countries and Peoples' in 1868 (reprinted in facsimile with an
introduction by George Shepperson in 1969. Is commemorated by the
University of Edinburgh by a plaque in Buccleuch Place, Edinburgh.
Another possible other name might be
David Ochterlony Dyce-Sombre (1808-1851) First Asian MP (Sudbury 1841,
unseated for bribery 1842, found to be of unsound mind 1843 (or was he
framed?) but he was the first MP!). Born Bengal, died England. Has he
ever been written up?
Best wishes,
Peter
