Dear Geoff,
Thank you.
Could you tell me why Archer was turned down? He was the first Black mayor
in London and served as a councillor for quite a while....
Garvey lived in Westbourne Park - one address I have is 2 Beaumont Cres,
W14;
Nkrumah at 60 Burghley Road NW5,
Sancho in Charles St, Mayfair (Reyahn King might know the no. - she edited
most recent book on him; or try Dr Jill Barber, Westminster Archives)
If organisations can be recognised, then I would add to the list
the African Progress Union
the League of Coloured People
the West African Students Union
the Pan African Federation
th India League
the West African National Secretariat
the West African Students Union and the West Indian Students Union (same
building, partly donated by Nkrumah)

Subject: Re: nominations for Blue Plaques
Dear Marika
Thanks - a splendid list which we shall work through steadily, unless there
are names that stand out for early consideration. Our historian Emily Cole
may come back to you for more biographical information on some of these.
Some names have already been considered and turned down (eg John Archer,
Adelaide Hall) and others have been shortlisted for
research on addresses (Garvey, Nkrumah, Sancho). The eligibility threshold
is 20 years after death, not 30, and Bob Marley was shortlisted at the last
meeting. Organisations are not usually commemorated but there are some
exceptions if the association is considered to be particularly significant.
There is for example a plaque on County Hall commemorating the LCC and the
GLC.
The Mayor has no involvement in our blue plaques scheme, although he has
taken an interest in them in the past . I must leave it up to you whether
you contact him about the criteria, which were first established by the LCC,
confirmed by the GLC and continued by English Heritage. If the GLA wanted
to put up plaques on redeveloped sites, we would have no objection.
Best wishes
Geoff
