Dear Colleagues
Two points are worth making here:
1. Link checking on ADAM resources is continuing, although this has to be
on a voluntary basis since ADAM is no longer funded. This means that at
least the ADAM records continue to point to live resources, even though new
records are not being added. So it's not entirely accurate to say that ADAM
is not being updated.
2. A properly-funded successor resource discovery service for the visual
and performing arts should have been in place a long time ago. I understand
we may have to wait until Autumn 2003 before such a service becomes
available. This is a scandalous situation - the JISC quite properly ensured
that resource discovery projects in other subject areas (such as
engineering, medicine, and the social sciences) developed into full
services without a break. In contrast, users in the visual and performing
arts have been left stranded - it's a disgrace!
For what it's worth, I and many others continue to refer our students to
ADAM, albeit with caveats, simply because it's still the best available
resource for their subject.
Let's hope that we'll have our successor resource discovery service really
soon. The Creative Arts Hub are due to report on progress at ARLIS
Conference in August - http://www.gsa.ac.uk/arlis2002/ - we must hope for
good news!
Best wishes
John

That's down to the VADS, who host the archived ADAM site. The staff of
ADAM were no longer in the loop when these decisions were made. I'm
surprised they haven't done what you suggest, actually, because it is
misleading.
Sarah.
