AIM25, in progress since January 2000, is a project (funded by the Research
Support Libraries Programme) to provide electronic access to
collection-level descriptions of archives held in nearly 50 higher education
institutions and learned societies in the London area, including both
institutional records and deposited collections.
There are over 5,000 descriptions currently on the website for users to
browse and search, covering a wide range of subjects including medicine,
science, technology, education, social science, religion, language and
literature, politics, law, and economics. Some of the records covered have
never been described before, and most descriptions have not previously been
available online.
A new home page including a search box for quick searching has recently been
launched. In addition to free text searching, there are indexes for personal
and corporate names, places, and subjects. Subject indexing is based on the
UNESCO Thesaurus, following the format devised for the National Digital
Archive of Datasets.
Usage is increasing rapidly, with over 300,000 hits in September 2002, and a
total of over 2 million hits since the site went live, over half of those in
the last 6 months.
