Resource Appoints Justin Frost as Senior Policy Adviser

London, 6 September 2002 - Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries has appointed Justin Frost as Senior Policy Adviser (Archives). Before joining Resource Justin was Head of Archive Inspection Services at the Public Record Office (PRO). He has been on secondment to Resource from the PRO since Resource's formation in April 2000.

Justin Frost said: "I am very pleased to accept this permanent post, which will enable me to continue to co-ordinate Resource's ambitious agenda for UK archives. We are entering an exciting time of opportunity for archives, and I look forward to working with colleagues creating the National Archives and supporting proposals for new archival legislation. I am especially keen to take forward the Resource Archives Task Force, which will raise the profile of archives and the important role they play."

Justin's work will play a key role in developing and implementing Resource's archive policy. He will work closely with UK archive service providers, practitioners, archive representative professional bodies, government departments and agencies and regional cultural agencies tasked with responsibility for archives to evolve and develop archive policy and practice. He is also the Project Manager of the Archives Task Force.

Resource wishes to encourage innovative, creative thinking in and for the archives domain, long-term planning and capacity building and will identify and develop means of improving standards for archives and will continue to work with the archive community to put these into practice.

Justin's role will be to encourage and foster co-operation, collaboration and partnership between the archive community and their partners and related organisations. He will explore opportunities for improving contacts and co-operation between the UK archive community and overseas equivalents and examine and continue to monitor the issues of training and skills enhancement within the archive community.

Resource provides the strategic leadership, advocacy and advice to enable museums, archives and libraries to touch people's lives and inspire their imagination, learning and creativity. The Resource website can be viewed at http://www.resource.gov.uk

The Archives Task Force was formed when the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) asked Resource to carry out an in-depth analysis and review of the state of the UK's unique and diverse archives. Resource will undertake a close and detailed investigation of UK archives, demonstrating how this unrivalled but often neglected national legacy can be turned more fully to advantage as a rich learning resource accessible to all, a means of reinforcing our sense of local and national community and the nation's personal, corporate and public memory.

The work of the Task Force will centre on wide consultation with archive users, potential users and archive professionals, to ensure that the full range of views from the archives world will be considered. The membership of the Archives Task Force will be announced at the Society of Archivists conference in Jersey early in October.
