Hull City Archives has also recently invested in a Canon 400 microfilm
scanner. It produces very high quality printouts, and the same carrier (RCF
200) is used for microfilm and microfiche. The public have found it quite
simple to use, and it doesn't take up much space. We got it through
Microformat UK Ltd of Rochester. It doesn't get the amount of use it would
in a county record office but seems quite robust.

Bromley Local Studies has two combined film/fiche reader printers, both of
which are easy to use, and the public should be able to change them over
after instruction. They are Regma AR4 from Bell and Howell, and Canon
Microfilm Scanner 400 with Roll/fiche carrier 200. Ours was supplied by AMP
because they then had a contract with Kent CC. The Canon is the newer. An
assortment of lenses is available.

We have a combined film/fiche reader, which prints copies as well. It
is a
Canon MP90 which is very good .. but!

When you want to change, we have to change the carriage and the toner,
which involves opening the back. After a few times of this, there is a
widget inside which gets a bit awkward and it means slamming the thing
shut. We are now waiting for a new widget. Even if we bought the
carriage which has both fiche and film combined, we would still have to
do
this. Bell & Howell had one a few years ago which didn't need this
performance, I think they still do it.

The public just have to sit and wait while we do it!

Warwickshire County Record Office are in the process of buying new
microfilm and microfiche readers. We have previously used separate
machines but are considering combined film/fiche readers to increase the

flexibility of our service.

Are any record offices using combined machines? If so, we would be
grateful to hear your comments on them (on or off list). How easy is it
to
change from film to fiche, how easy do the public find the task, where
did
you get them from etc.

Many thanks,
Hilary Peck
