THE NEED FOR STATISTICS LEGISLATION: A CONSULTATION
DOCUMENT
In June 2000 the Framework for National Statistics charged the
Statistics
Commission with reviewing the need for statistics legislation after
two
years, and reporting back to the Minister for National Statistics.
We
have now started our consideration of how best to establish a firm
constitutional framework, which consolidates progress made so far
in the
development of National Statistics and provides a foundation on
which
further progress can be built.
It is important that the review takes account of the full range of
relevant issues and we have just issued a consultation document
which sets
out what we currently see them to be. We would be grateful for comments
from all interested in National Statistics. The document is being
circulated widely but printed copies are available from the Commission's
office (tel: 020 7273 8008, email: [log in to unmask]). It is also
on our website at:
http://www.statscom.org.uk/resources/other_docs/paper03.pdf.
