> About the day
> The event is organised through the Subject Centre for languages,
> linguistics and area studies in which CILT is a partner. The event aims to
> bring postgraduate students in languages and linguistics together to
> discuss issues of mutual concern, find out about resources available for
> locating research, discover real and virtual networks and how to
> effectively use them, discuss the challenges of juggling life, work and a
> PhD and look at methods for collecting and analyzing data. This visit is
> offered free of charge to postgraduate students. While lunch is not
> provided, light refreshments will be available in the morning.
> Sessions will include:
> 1) Locating research in language teaching and learning and linguistics
> Dawn Ebbrell, HE Information Officer, CILT/Subject Centre
> This session will provide hints and tips on useful printed and on-line
> sources of information helpful in locating research.
> 2) Life, work and doctorates - keeping a balance!
> Cathy Watts, University of Brighton.
> This practical, informal session will consider ways of managing your time
> and coping with the demands placed on you as you complete your doctoral
> studies providing some helpful 'tips'and generating discussion.
> 3) Networking: making effective use of real and virtual groups

> This session will look at ways of establishing yourself as a member of the
> academic community while you are a student. We look within the university,
> at how research seminar presentations can serve as a first outing for your
> ideas, and at the publishing opportunities afforded by working papers. We
> move to the wider academic world, the world of subject associations,
> conferences and journal papers and take in the virtual world of personal
> web-pages, email lists and online conferences. There will be an
> opportunity for questions and discussion.
> 4) Analyzing and collecting data

> This session reports on techniques used by a specific project for
> collecting, transcribing and analyzing data.
> The CILT Resources Library Collection is a national reference resource for
> language teachers and others working in the fields of language learning /
> teaching and associated fields of applied linguistics. It comprises
> several distinct collections including teaching materials, language
> teaching methodology, an extensive collection of periodicals and
> abstracting indexes and the Subject Centre's Higher Education Resources
> Collection. This event will include a tour and overview of the resources
> held at CILT. Participants are welcome to stay until 17:00 to look around
> the resources in the CILT library.
