1. CURRICULUM 2000 - ITS IMPACT ON ADMISSIONS POLICIES AND THE HE CURRICULUM -
11 October 2002, Open University, London
Changes in the take up of languages at AS and A2 level, as well as changes in
the pre- and post-16 language curriculum will impact on the level, content and
structure of language courses offered by HE modern languages departments.
At this event, there will be speakers from QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum
Authority), UCAS, CILT and the Subject Centre. We also hope to bring you
Keith Marshall's latest data on admissions and on take up of languages at
AS/A2 level. We would encourage each department to send an admissions officer
to this workshop as there will be opportunities for discussion and sharing of
strategies and concerns. For more information, go to:
http://www.lang.ltsn.ac.uk/events/curriculum.html.
Please note that there is a charge of £40 per person to attend this event.

5. SUBJECT CENTRE WORKSHOP - INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS FOR LANGUAGE TEACHING - 9
Oct 02 - University Of Hull (10.30 - 16.30) - £25.00 Per Person
This workshop, led by Ros Walker, will look at the effective use of
interactive whiteboards in the classroom. The focus of this workshop will be
on the emerging methodology for effective use of the whiteboards. The
workshop will be based on a Promethean interactive board and will be suitable
for those with little or no previous knowledge of the boards. The morning
will consist of demonstrations and hands-on practice with the board,
highlighting the key functions of the board for language teachers. Examples of
good practice will be combined with time to reflect and discuss teaching with
the board.
In the afternoon session participants will use the whiteboard themselves to
present work, prepared on laptops during the workshop. There will also be
demonstrations of some of the other leading
commercially available interactive whiteboards.
Ros Walker is a member of staff at Hull University, based in the Institute for
Learning. She is working on a two year research project, funded by NESTA
(National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts). The project aims to
promote excellence in teaching with Interactive Whiteboards, through the
identification of best practice, the development of appropriate training
models and the development of digital resources, including those for MFL. Ros
is a qualified and experienced teacher of languages in secondary and adult
education.
