The National Postgraduate Committee (NPC) has commissioned University of Warwick Students' Union to carry out a national survey of UK postgraduate students.
The survey is being carried out mostly with the help of Careers Advisory Services at institutions, with the support of AGCAS. However, we still require another 2 institutions to participate. If any Graduate Schools or administrators would be interested in helping out, please get in touch with me as soon as possible - email: [log in to unmask] or tel: 024 7657 2821.
Some more information follows...
We are asking each participating institution to send up to 500 questionnaires (depending on the number of postgraduates at the institution) to a randomly drawn sample of current, UK domiciled postgraduate students - including full- and part-time students. We will provide envelopes which are pre-packed and ready to send, and will advise on how to draw the sample. We hope that questionnaires to full-time students can be sent by internal mail, but we will cover the cost of postage to part-time students. In return, we will provide institutions with the report which results from the research, and a copy of the data collected from that institution. We will not name institutions in the published report (though you may be included in a list of participating institutions if you wish to be recognised for your contribution).
The main objectives of the project are to consider:
* What factors do students consider in deciding to pursue postgraduate study?
* How are postgraduate students funded through their courses, and what are the implications of these funding mechanisms?
* How many postgraduate students undertake paid work, what sort of work do they do and why, and what impact does this have on their study (if any)?
* What are the future career plans of postgraduate students, and what factors do they take into account in making these plans? Does debt accrued as a student have any effect on these plans?
There has been very little research into postgraduate funding sources, and how funding affects the future life choices of postgraduate students, compared to similar studies of undergraduate students. This research will provide the NPC, and other groups interested in postgraduate education, with evidence to present to government calling for a more coherent system of postgraduate funding. The research will also help Careers Advisory Services in developing the information they provide for those considering postgraduate study, and for graduating postgraduates seeking help finding careers.
This project has been made possible thanks to the sponsorship of CSU (publishers of Prospects).
