Dear Susanna,
Regarding your request on trainers, it might be an idea to ensure that any
trainer you get will be able to give your staff appropriate knowledge that
is based on a holistic approach to all current Equality and Diversity
issues, including all the pending legislation. Staff will then be able to
link all equality and diversity requirements and effectively incorporate and
implement them in all those institutional functions that are qualified to be
relevant.
This is advantageous in two ways, firstly it will enable staff to ensure
that in implementing their functions, they are dealing with all the relevant
requirements of equality and diversity, from a holistic approach, rather
than from an idiosyncratic approach which might result in unwitting
discriminatory practice for some whose needs might not necessarily be taken
into account. Secondly, you will be able to maximise on trainer time and get
best value for your money because you will be able to use the same trainer
to deal with the various needs of your staff, in response to the various
legislative requirements on your institution, instead of having to get
different trainers for different legislative needs, unless you have to, of
course.
A word of caution though, you might want to evidently be sure that you have
taken into account ALL the legislative needs of your institution and staff,
without marginalising others and also be sure to qualify your trainer
through more than just what they are saying. I say this because some of the
areas we are looking to train our staff in, race for example, need certain
sensitivities and particular knowledge, skills and abilities if we are to
give our staff the necessary knowledge and skills they are going to need in
order to enable our institutions to respond adequately and appropriately,
to the statutory requirements of all the Equality and Diversity Legislation.
As usual, comments are most welcome.
Regards.
