Is there an evidence based fasting interval for performing lipid profiles?
Do we mean overnight, 12hr, 14hr, nil by mouth (or are small sips of water
permitted) and what about medication? Julian Barth's book on Biochemical
Investigations in Laboratory Medicine says 12 to 14 hrs for lipids and 10
to 16 for GTTs.
I seem to recall that normally chylomicra are cleared within 4 hours (and
also that cleaning teeth may raise lipids slightly!!). So are we simply
using an arbitrary time interval to ensure that this period has passed?
We should all be using the same practice but I supect there is very wide
variation. (My department says 14hr fast, small amounts of water and
continue with medication as normal). Eric Hindle
