medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. December) is the feast day of:
Valeria of Limoges (d. mid-3rd cent.) Valeria was a pagan, born in
Limoges. She was baptized, aparently by Martial of Limoges, but her pagan
fiance was so angry at this circumstance that he had her beheaded. The
cult of Valeria developed after her tomb was discovered in the eleventh
century in the crypt of St-Martial in Limoges next to the grave of Bishop
Martial.
Eucharius of Trier (d. 2nd half 3rd cent.) Eucharius was the first bishop
of Trier. Later legend made him a disciple of St. Peter. Gregory of Tours
reports that Eucharius (posthumously?) protected the city from an epidemic
of plague, and also from demons.
Leokadia (d. 304) The cult of Leokadia is attested in Toledo at least
since the fifth century. She was apparently a young girl, martyred in
Diocletian's persecution. She is patron saint of Toledo.
Syrus of Pavia (d. early 4th cent.) Syrus (Siro) was the first bishop of
Pavia; he probably held office at the beginning of the fourth century.
Another tradition reports that Syrus was consecrated by St. Peter and sent
to Pavia. Many Italian churches are dedicated to Syrus---and also San Siro
soccer stadium in Milan.
Gorgonia (d. c. 373) Gorgonia was the sister of Gregory Nazianzus the
Younger. She was apparently a model Christian woman, mother, and wife.
Severus of Prague (d. 1067) Not formally canonized. The Benedictine
Severus became bishop of Prague in 1031. He was famous for the many
churches he built in his diocese. Because of his criticism of the rulers
of Bohemia, Severus was at times persecuted, and even imprisoned for a
time.
