Apologies for crossposting
Dear all
I have been asked to forward this to a number of discussion
lists and have agreed to do so because the librarians amongst you may
well be interested! If you take part in this study, the carrot is100
pounds of M&S vouchers. The downside is the tight time scale. Tempted?

Subject: Invitation to UK librarians
**We wish to recruit librarians willing to spend up to 9 hours
searching
on-line sources for material relevant to answer 9 clinical
questions, in
return for 100 pounds in M&S vouchers**
The Knowledge Sources Coverage Study is run by Jeremy Wyatt,
University
College London and Claire O'Brien, University of Cambridge, and
was
commissioned by NHS R&D to study the coverage and ease of use of
a variety
of NHS-commended knowledge sources, in order to inform the NHS
clinical
knowledge management strategy.
The study includes the following stages:
- Testing the ease of use of on-line knowledge sources by UK
librarians
- Assessing the coverage provided by these sources using
clinical questions
collected in both primary and secondary care in the UK, using
librarians to
search for relevant material and clinicians to synthesise
answers from that
material
- Checking the perceived relevance of the answers to the
original
questioners where known, and independently rating the quality of
the
answers.
We now wish to recruit UK librarians willing to spend up to 9
hours
searching on-line sources for material relevant to answer 9
clinical
questions.
Eligibility criteria:
- Access to computer terminal with Internet connection, and
NHSnet
connection (or NHS staff ATHENS userID and subscription to
on-line Cochrane
Library); running at reasonable speed for browsing a series of
sites; and
either at the same computer terminal, or at another terminal
with a means to
transfer text files between the two (e.g. on floppy disk), the
ability to
receive, read and send Microsoft Word documents by e-mail.
- Able to commit to 9 hours work between 17 December 2001 and 13
January
2002 (questions will be sent out in two batches - four during
December and
five at the beginning of January).
Honorarium:
All completed forms and material must be returned by 13 January
2002 in
order to receive the honorarium: a Marks & Spencer voucher for
100 pounds.
If you would like to take part please reply as soon as possible
to Helen
King at UCL on [log in to unmask]; Helen will send out
instructions and
forms, and if on receipt of these you agree to take part, she
will send you
the first four, of a total of nine, questions.
