medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. December) is the feast day of:
Tanco (d. 808) Tanco was abbot of Amorbach (Bavaria). Later he was a
missionary in Saxony and seems to been consecrated as a bishop. His death
in 808 was possibly a martyrdom.
Ado of Vienne (d. 875) Ado was born in c. 800 in Sens. He became a
Benedictine monk. Ado served for a time as master of the school in Prum.
Then, after a time in Italy he went to Lyons, where he engaged in pastoral
care. In 860 Ado became archbishop of Vienne. He is most famous for his
defense of marriage as an indissoluble state during the Lothar II divorce
controversy.
Adelheid (d. 999) Adelheid was the daughter of King Rudolf of Burgundy,
born in 931. She married King Lothar of Italy, but was widowed at the age
of 19. She then married Otto I of Germany in 951, and the two were crowned
as emperor and empress in 962. She acted for several years as regent for
her grandson Otto III, but was most active in her widowhood as a monastic
founder, especially the monastery of Selz in Alsace. Adelheid was a strong
proponent of the Cluniac reform; Abbot Odilo returned the favor with his
highly panegyric Epitaphium Adelheidae. An early case of canonization,
Adelheid was pronounced a saint by Urban II in 1097.
Rainald of Bar (blessed) (d. 1150) Rainald was born in c. 1100, a son of
the count of Bar. He became a monk at Clairvaux, and in 1133 became abbot
of Citeaux. He is supposed to have been a co-author of the first statutes
of the Cistercian order.
Sebastiano Maggi (d. 1496) (blessed) Sebastiano Maggi was one of the most
important penitential preachers of Italy. He was a Dominican friar and
held several high offices in the order. He is most notable for his
tireless efforts toward reform in northern Italy.
And of course, the blessed Ludwig van Beethoven and Jane Austen.
