medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear learned ones,
Here is a question I beg you never thought you
would see! Does anyone know of any traditions, genuine
or fictional, concerning Thomas Beckets family and possible
relation in Iceland, Norway, OR the Anglo=Saxon or
Norman royal families? I have a reference to Thomas saga erkibiskups,
ed Eirikur Magnusson, 1883, II, 293-4, with ref. to
Canterbury Cathedral Register, R 19, fol. 83
= Literae Cantuarienses III 1889 nr 995 pp. 137-38
The reference is a confraternity letter for
Wytfrido filio Ivarij de Insula de Island
and his family, in which he APPEARS (and I cant make anything
more of the text than Eirikr Magnusson) to claim Thomas
as a relation. If anyone has access to the Canterbury
material it would be very nice to know if this is correct
in the first place. Hunting in scandinavian sources has
yielded nothing, but it has struck me that the most likely
lin of investigation might be the common attempt of
genealagists to link up to royalty of one sort of another.
Anglo-saxon genealogies were known in iceland,
and William the conqueror (referred to, of course, as
William the Bastard) also appears. So any real or
imagined connection of Thomas with royalty in the
British Isles is a potential link.
As well, of course, as any real or imagined scandinavian
connections! (and on this note, anyone who runs across
the stray icelander or norwegian (or dane or swede)
in their vita or
miracle collection, please let me know!
with best wishes for the feast of St Magnus and St Lucy
(tomorrow),
