medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. December) is the feast day of:
Eulalia of Merida (d. 304) Eulalia is one of the most-venerated saints of
Spain. According to legend, at the age of twelve Eulalia escaped from her
parents' house because she wanted to be a martyr. To this end, she
appeared before the governor of Merida, ripped an idol from the wall, and
trampled it. She was arrested and tortured (most notably by having boiling
oil poured over her), and then was burned to death---either on a pyre or in
an oven. An "oven of St. Eulalia" is still shown in Merida.
Gregory III (d. 741) The son of a Syrian, Gregory became a priest in Rome
and in 731 was elected pope by popular acclaim during the funeral of his
predecessor. Gregory was a strong opponent of iconoclasm, and the ensuing
conflict with the Eastern Roman emperor led Gregory to take the first steps
in forging the alliance of the papacy with the Carolingians, when Gregory
asked Charles Martel for help against the Lombards.
Immina (d. 750) Immina was a daughter of the duke of Thuringia, born c.
700. She became a nun and latter abbess at the convent of Karlburg near
Wurzburg. Immina is also supposed to have given Marienberg near Wurzburg
with the monastery thereto Bishop Burkhard of Wurzburg---an act taken as
the true oundation of the diocese.
