medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dr Jestice kindly supplied us with the following notice:
*****
Today (30. November) is the feast day of:
Andrew (d. 60) Andrew was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and was the brother
of Simon Peter. After spending time as a disciple of John the Baptist,
Andrew became one of the first apostles. According to tradition, after the
resurrection Andrew worked as a missionary in Greece, south of the Black
Sea, and in Bithynia. He is supposed to have been martyred in Patras, by
being crucified on an X-shaped (St. Andrew's) cross. Andrew's relics were
taken to Amalfi in 1208. His head reached Rome in 1462, but was returned
to Patras by Pope Paul VI.

A bit distracted lately, it didn't dawn on me until our local classical music station began with the bagpipes that this was THAT St Andrew (!) patron of Scotland and golfers. Now Scotland is a long way from Amalfi, or Bithynia for that matter. Anyone know off the top o'their heads why and when... (keeping in mind this list's recent caveat about "official" patron saints...)
