medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As a member of St. John Cantius parish (where a new religious order, the Society of St. John Cantius, was founded in 1998, see www.cantius.org), a parish where the old (pre-1969) calendar is observed alongside the new calendar, since the Mass according to both the 1962 Missal (with episcopal approval) and 1970 Missal is offered every Sunday, I believe that the old date for St. John Cantius was in October (the 21st, if I remember correctly). The calendar revisions have led to a good bit of confusion in all sorts of ways and having both calendars observed in one parish can have its disadantages, but on the other hand, we have two days on which to celebrate the parish's patron's feast. Since the new calendar date still falls very close to Christmas, the October date in effect receives the greater attention, usually connected with a Forty Hours devotion (40 hours of Eucharistic adoration, a post-medieval development, 16th or 17thc, I believe, out of Italy).

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. December) is the feast day of:
Johannes Cantius of Cracow (d. 1473) Johannes was born in 1390 in Poland;
he became a canon and professor of theology in Cracow. In the course of
his lifetime, he made four barefoot pilgrimages to Rome and one to
Jerusalem. Johannes was honored as a saint in his lifetime, especially for
his deep piety and love of others. There were numerous miracles at his
tomb, and he was beatified in 1690 and canonized in 1767. His feast was
originally celebrated on Christmas Eve, but in 1969 was moved to the 23rd.
