medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. December) is the feast day of:
Crispina (d. 304) Crispina was born in the late third century in North
Africa. She was martyred in Thabaste (Numidia) at the orders of the
proconsul. The acts of her trial still survive. Crispina soon won
widespread veneration in Africa; Augustine wrote two sermons in honor of
her feast day.
Sabas of Mar Saba (of Jerusalem) (d. 532) Sabas was one of the founders of
eastern monasticism. He was born in 439 in Cappadocia. At the age of
eight, at his own insistence, he entered a nearby monastery. Sabas went on
to Palestine when he was 17. He spent several years as a hermit at several
locations, before he founded the monastery of Mar Saba for his many
students. This may have been the first monastery in Palestine. Sabas
himself lived in a cave, which may still be seen near his chapel.
Justinian (d. 540 (?)) Judtinian was probably a Breton. He lived on the
monastic island Ramey on the Scottish coast in the sixth century. In 540
he was murdered by his three servants, and is regarded as a martyr.
Gerald of Braga (d. 1108) Gerald was a monk of Moissac (France). At the
request of Archbishop Bernard of Toledo, Gerald went at the end of the
eleventh century to Braga in Gallicia to restore the devastated diocese.
Gerald introduced the Cluniac reform there, and after great successes was
named metropolitan of Braga in 1103.
Christina of Markyate (d. 1161) Not formally canonized, but a good example
of twelfth-century piety. Christina was born in Huntingdon (England) in c.
1097. She vowed herself to virginity, but was forced to marry by her
parents. After a year of wedlock, a hermit helped Christina flee, and she
hid for two years. After that she settled as a recluse in Markyate, where
she was famed as a spiritual advisor.
Bartolomeo Fanti (blessed) (d. 1495) Bartolomeo was born in Mantua in
1410. He is one of the most important figures in Carmelite history,
winning great veneration on account of his wisdom and holy life. His cult
was approved in 1909.
