Dear Ted,
Greetings from Al-Ain the oasis city. Regarding the above posting you might
find the following of some relevance. I searched the literature with
SUMSEARCH my favourite search engine @
(http://sumsearch.uthscsa.edu/searchform45.htm) and using the related
article function ended up with this list.
DeStefano F, Chen RT. Autism and measles-mumps-rubella vaccination:
controversy laid to rest? CNS Drugs 2001;15(11):831-7
“Currently, the weight of the available epidemiological and related evidence
does not support a causal association between MMR vaccine, or any other
vaccine or vaccine constituent, and autism”. This was the conclusion of the
latest review from the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental
Disabilities, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Halsey NA, Hyman SL; Conference Writing Panel. Measles-mumps-rubella vaccine
and autistic spectrum disorder: report from the New Challenges in Childhood
Immunizations Conference convened in Oak Brook, Illinois, June 12-13, 2000.
Pediatrics 2001 May;107(5):E84
The above consensus conference concluded “available evidence does not
support the hypothesis that MMR vaccine causes autism or associated
disorders or IBD. Separate administration of measles, mumps, and rubella
vaccines to children provides no benefit over administration of the
combination MMR vaccine and would result in delayed or missed immunizations.
Pediatricians need to work with families to ensure that children are
protected early in the second year of life from these preventable diseases.
Continued scientific efforts need to be directed to the identification of
the causes of ASD”.

One of the unfortunate outcomes of this controversy is that it has affected
the career of a colleague. I was in the UK last week and read in the
newspaper that a colleague who first reported this association had to quit
his London hospital job. I think this is unfortunate, as we need clinical
scientists from both sides of the spectrum on any issue.
(this is my own ramblings and is not evidence based)
Season's greetings and very best wishes,
Badrinath
