Crossing the Boundaries X
An Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference
April 5-7, 2002
Binghamton University, Binghamton, New York
The Politics of Imagination
Has Imagination left the building? Although there is a
strong tradition emphasizing the centrality of the
imagination to scholarly endeavors, this issue is no
longer considered pertinent to the production of
knowledge. This is the paradoxical status of
imagination in contemporary discourse: tacitly
acknowledged as a corollary of liberal society, our
capacity to think otherwise is taken for granted and
therefore escapes scrutiny. The objective of this
conference is precisely to draw attention to this
feature of intellectual life, in both its historical
scope and geographical frontiers.
Questions we would like to consider include: How have
the coordinates of power and imagination been mapped
out across history? To what uses have they been put,
and where do we stand in relation to them today ? Does
the imagination require a certain moment, a certain
context, a certain audience to be realized ? How can
this issue help us to rethink contemporary
intellectual paradigms ?
We encourage and enthusiastically welcome submissions
from all disciplines. Please forward your one-page
abstract (250 words) by January 14, 2002 to Damien
Kempf and Victoria Scott c/o the Department of Art
