Dear John
I liked your plot summary for Adbul - it always was
one of my favourite songs!
In my copy of Francis & Day's "Camp Fire and Fireside
Songbook", 'Abdul Abulbul Amir' is credited to Frank
Crumit with the copyright 1928 by F.B. Haviland
Pub.Co., 114 West 44th Street, New York. However,
after searching the web, it could be that it is only
the muscial arrangement that is by Crumit (1889-1943).
I have found a credit for authorship to William Percy
French (1854-1920) who was born at Cloonyquin, County
Roccommon, Ireland
During his early days French usually composed or
arranged the music for his songs himself and many of
his greatest and most popular compositions fall into
this category including 'Abdulla Bulbul Ameer' and
'Phil the Fluter's Ball'.
Does anyone know which of these two chaps actually
wrote 'Abdul'?
With best regards
David Page, Harrow
