THE SECOND MEETING OF 2001-02 will be held on Thursday, December 6th, from
7-9pm in the Lounge on the second floor of Logan Hall at the University of
Pennsylvania. Persons wishing to dine with other participants prior to
the meeting should meet at 6 pm at Logan Hall (southeast of Locust Walk
and
36th Street Walk) or go directly to the Food Court in the basement of
Houston Hall (just east of Logan, along Spruce Street), where a variety of
food choices is available at reasonable prices.
The evening program will be a workshop on the topic
"Revisiting Jews and Christian Persecutions: the evidence from Smyrna"
led by E. Leigh Gibson, Oberlin University.
In preparation, we are asked to read the Martyrdom of Pionios and the
Martyrdom of Polycarp. The Musurillo translation of the former is
recommended and is available on the web -- see Darrell Doughty's page at
