Brighton & Hove Libraries will shortly be abandoning the software filtering
system that is currently in use on our Public Internet PC's. This will
bring us in line with the recommendations of the Library Association and is
a welcome move. However, it will place greater emphasis on staff to ensure
that our Acceptable Use Policy is respected by public users.
We are currently considering how this might be achieved and are looking at
various models employed by other Library Services prior to making a policy
decision. Suggestions currently have included taking library ticket numbers
for bookings, but this conflicts with our social inclusion policy, in
insisting that everyone who uses the library is a member. Another
suggestion was to have 'floorwalkers' in the area of the PC's to physically
watch waht people are lookingat, but this raises issues of privacy, as well
as having implications on staff time.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could give us any information as to
how public internet access is monitored within your Library service.
