CALL FOR PAPERS
3rd Limerick Conference in Irish-German Studies, 4-6 April 2002
Ireland and the German-speaking countries
Questions of cultural identity in Austria and Switzerland
This is a call for papers, in English or German, on the following themes:
* Questions of cultural identity in Austria and Switzerland
* Irish-Austrian or Irish-Swiss relations
In our 3rd Limerick Conference the focus will be on questions of identity in
Austria and in Switzerland and on Irish-Austrian and Irish-Swiss relations.
These countries have seen considerable debate as to what constitutes their
cultural identity or whether there is such a thing in the first place. New
insights may be provided on a number of topics through the inclusion of a
comparative perspective, not least the realisation that there is
considerably more commonality than might have been thought. A broad range of
issues invites critical examination and comparison. These include:
* Early contacts through the Irish monks on the continent
* The influence of large neighbouring states
* Swiss, Austrian and Irish neutrality
* Austria and Ireland both being small EU member states
We are also very interested in papers on literary, linguistic and artistic
developments that highlight particular developments in each state's
identities. Questions that could be addressed include:
* What does it mean to be Austrian or Swiss
* Stereotypes / Misconceptions of Austrian, Swiss and possibly Irish
culture
* Variations and shifts within the national identities (regional,
generational, gender-based, ethnic, socio-economic)
Comparative contributions examining issues in all three countries (and
possibly including Germany as well) are also welcome.
The plenary speakers include: Prof. Dr. Joep Leerssen (Amsterdam), Prof. Dr.
Werner Welzig (Vienna), Bundesrätin Ruth Dreifuss (Bern) tbc, Felix Mitterer
(Dublin/Vienna) tbc, Peter Bichsel (Solothurn) tbc
