Dear Listmembers,
The suggestion, expressed by some members of this discussion list, that
being a doctor and / or an epidemiologist conveys a heightened level of
understanding of the issues surrounding the present conflict or a deeper
sense of compassion might be seen as an insult to non-medics on this list.
Please desist from such suggestions. We are all in this together.
Declaration of interest: I was born in 1943 in Lueneburg, a pleasant little
salt-mining market town in northern Germany, obliterated by Allied carpet
bombing in 1944. If the ideas implied in Chomsky's musings, which he is
entitled to express in a open society, had prevailed in the period between,
say, 1938 - 1945, the bombing of Coventry, Dresden and numerous other places
could perhaps have been avoided, and I might now be a minor concentration
camp commander, about to retire on health reasons, somewhere this side of
the Ural.
I don't relish the thought.
With kind regards,
